Sensei Javier Garriga
Head Coach
Javier Garriga, founder of Westlake Judo Club, is a Certified National U.S.A. Olympic Judo Coach. Head Judo instructor  (Sensei) and Coach for children and adults since 1994.  Organize, compete and coaching competitions nationwide.  Sensei Garriga is a 3rd Dan in Judo, 1st Dan in Selai Seito Goja-Roju Karate, 1st Dan Traditional Jujitsu, United Fighting System: and 1st Dan Hambo Japanese Weapon.  Javier Garriga has accomplished through his life, several Tournaments and Competitions National and Internationally.  Most Recently:  Silver medalist San Antonio Open 2013. Gold Medalist in the Games of Texas 2012.  First and Second places, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011 Houston Judo Open, heavyweight Seniors and Masters. 2nd Place, 2007 Texas A&M Judo Classic, heavyweight seniors. 1st Place, 2005 Lone Star Judo Classic, Fort Worth, TX, heavyweight.  1st Place, 2004 Texas A&M Judo Classic, Heavyweight Masters.  1st Place, 2004 Dallas International Judo Championship, heavyweight Masters,  Gold Medalist and M.V.P. 1994, Aqua Fest Austin Judo Tournament, heavyweight Seniors.  1970's and 1980's numerous Puerto Rican Championships. Silver Medalist in 1976 in the Junior Pan-American Judo Tournament in Mexico City. 


Sensei Johnny Marquez
Assistant Coach

Sensei Johnny began learning judo in 1962 in NYC.  Practiced at the American Buddhist Academy under Sensei Higashi, 8th dan. Waseda Judo Club under Sensei Yamashita 8th dan. A
wards: 1964-65 New York State Junior Olympic Champion/New York State brown belt champion/promoted to shodan, first degree in 1967, in competition. 
ARLATEX Judo Champion 1968/ Nebraska 1971 Nebraska State Overall Champion/ two-time Texas State Collegiate Champion/1984 US Judo National Championships, bronze medal winner. 
Sensei Johnny holds the rank of yodan, 4th degree black belt.
 
 
Sensei Frank Torres
Assistant Coach
Sensei Frank Torres, is a 3rd Dan in Judo and a National Olympic Judo Coach. Sensei Torres started Judo in 1969 at the age of 9. He competed and won in numerous State, Regional, National and AAU competitions. Sensei Frank  enlisted in the Army and continued his Judo in Germany and South Korea where he honed his skills in European Judo. In 1994 Sensei Frank Torres moved to Texas where he began his journey as an assistant coach in developing many fine Judo competitors.  In 2009 Sensei Frank Torres joined Westlake Judo Club where he continues to develop Judokas who are the future of the sport.


Sensei Dan Rusu
Assistant Coach
Sensei Rusu has over 19 years of experience as judoka and 8 years as judo instructor. He has gained a rich and flavoured international experience while practicing in four countries and teaching/coaching in  three countries.  Mr. Rusu started judo as a teenager in Romania, practicing for 10 years at both recreational and competitive levels. Having moved to Canada, where he embraced a successful career as an engineer, Mr. Rusu temporarily interrupted his active life but returned, eventually, to his first passion: judo. His competition experience includes national tournaments as junior and senior judoka as well as regional-Canadian and European tournaments as master (older than 32 years) judoka. In 2010, Mr. 
Rusu became part of the GB Master’s Squad, being so entitled to represent Great Britain in any of the 
International Veterans Championships. 
Sensei Dan obtained his first judo instructor licence from Judo Bond Nederland in 2008 and can run 
classes in three languages: English, Dutch and Romanian. He further enriched his coaching skills in 
UK, where he qualified as UKCC Level 3 Coach. Returning to Holland, Sensei Dan obtained his LevelA Judo Coach certification. 
Sensei Dan coached judokas at local, regional and international level tournaments. He has been 
recognized by children, parents and peers for his patience and passion in working with children.

Sensei Jim Haynes
Distinguished Coach
 
Sensei Jim Haynes has traveled all over the world participating and competing in judo competitions. He is a 6th Degree Black Belt and is Director of Certification & Examinations in Texas.
